Wow what a great day we all had Saturday October 7. The weather was kind to the riders, Phil Doncon did an amazing job keeping us entertained, painting 4 awesome pictures, we had a wonderful meal prepared for us and the atmosphere back at the pavilion was full of positive energy.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to our very successful event. Our committee once again worked in conjunction with the Shire of Moora to ensure that the day ran smoothly. We had 110 riders participate this year individually and in teams. There were 20 riders who rode the 88km event (four of whom ended up doing a few extra kilometres), 56 who rode in the 52km event and 34 in the Grommet Grinder, 15km ride. There were many familiar faces and new ones amongst the riders, including some local people that we hadn’t seen for some time.

As with any large event, it would not be possible to run without the voluntary contribution of many people. We would like to thank the communiites of Watheroo, Moora and Miling for once again contributing in many ways on the day. To the crews on the change over points, the sweepers, our talented announcer at the finish post, the ladies at the registration points in Moora and Watheroo, the bus driver, our social media guru, suppliers
of bulk water and hay bale decorations, auctioneer and the bar staff. You all know who you are, we thank you and appreciate the time you put into the Gravel Grinder event. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Sarah for working all day in the kitchen with her willing helpers to create another delicious meal enjoyed by everyone who ate in Watheroo on Saturday night.

This year we had four paintings that were auctioned, painted by Phil Doncon during the afternoon and evening. It was amazing to watch the canvas being painted and then transform into a picture only to be painted over before the final master piece was revealed. We had some
keen bidders who amongst them paid $2850 for the four paintings. The money from the auction and the kind donations we received will be sent to Shalom House in Caversham, a 120 bed rehabilitation centre for men.

Not only were we well supported with registrations this year, we are also fortunate to have generous sponsors who enable us to keep costs to a minimum for the participants. We appreciate the donations received by Giovi Agriculture, Plum Grove, Yarra Sand, CBH Group, Meers IGA Moora, Primaries CRT, Summit Fertilizers, Manavi Farm Pastured Eggs and Elders.

Despite the cold weather David Dew our DJ kept the crowd entertained for many hours, encouraging those of us brave enough to remain outside to get some moves happening on the dance floor. Last but not least we would like to reiterate our message to one and all to look after yourselves and your mates, and remember that it is never too late to reach out and ask for help. Once again thank you and we look forward to your continued support in 2018.
