Members of the Bindoon-based Brook hunt club dominated the podium at the Kulin bush races held over the weekend of October 4 and 5. The
country race meet has become a highlight for hunt club members who relish the opportunity to try their horses on the track in the amateur
competition.

2014 marked the 20 year anniversary of the Kulin bush races which after humble beginnings has become a major event for the wheatbelt town,
attracting a record crowd of 4500 punters and spectators this year.

Of the six races held over the course of the afternoon, all were won by members of the Brook hunt club, with Bullsbrook local Mike Butler taking
the honours for four races including the coveted Kulin Cup.

In the 1000 sprint, Mike’s seven year old bay hunt mount ‘Cris’, ridden by Ange Coote, crossed the line ahead of fellow club members’ horses Barbo, owned by Dale Deeks and ridden by Barbara Rose who came second; and High Salute, owned by Lousie Horwood and ridden by Leo Tharby who placed third. Cris continued in form to win the Holt Rock handicap just an hour and a half later – the last race of the day. His stable-mate Honky Tonk ridden by Jess Buller also earned his chaff, winning both the first and third races of the day and making a valuable contribution to owner Mike’s winnings.
