When the sun goes down on Stampede arena this New Years Eve, it will be for the last time. After 38 years the Bullsbrook rodeo grounds will be closed as the land becomes rehabilitated to form part of the ‘Biodiversity corridor’ and to extend the Bullsbrook training grounds for Defence personnel and cadets.

The 80 acre property has hosted rodeos since the seventies, and is the home of the West Coast Rodeo Circuit. The facility is also used by other groups including the WA mounted Police, Junior Team Penners WA, WA4D Barrel Racing Association and training for junior rodeo riders.

The original arena was built by Harold Adkins, and since then the maintenance of the facility, and construction of many yards and infrastructure has been the work of committed local volunteers.
Stan Baker, past president and current committee member of the West Coast Rodeo Circuit has run the legendary New Years Rodeo for the past ten years. He lived on the property as caretaker until recently.

Stan is sad to see the end of the era, but is positive. “We’re had a good stint here and seen a lot of young bull riders start off in this arena” he says.

“The bonus of this joint has been having all the land to keep the cattle, it’s all very well having an arena, but if you haven’t got property to hold cattle it becomes difficult.”

Partner Saira said Stan had trained many young bull riders at Stampede arena over the years, “That’s our main concern with this place shutting down is where all the Juniors will go”.
However the show must go on, and the couple are expecting a record turnout of around 2500 to see in the New Year at the biggest party of all. Top bull riders from all over the state will be coming, and they’re expected to put on a good show.

To celebrate the last rodeo Stan and Saira have sent free tickets to rodeo committee members from all over the state “It’s the hard work of all these committees and volunteers that keeps the sport going.” Stan says. He wanted everyone to be there to enjoy the final show.

It sure sounds like a party not to be missed with band J-Babies playing, food and entertainment for kids as well as all the usual Rodeo competitions including Steer Roping, Wrestling and Undecorating, Barrel racing and of course the bucking bulls and broncos.

It’s a fantastic way to spend New Year’s and camping is free.
