Women helping women – when they need it most

Local Bindoon resident Gwyneth Jones has joined the local arm of a world-wide organisation who are knitting to help bring comfort and dignity to women who have had a mastectomy.

Knitted Knockers (KK) are special handmade breast prosthesis for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast. Traditional breast prosthetics are usually expensive, heavy, sweaty and uncomfortable. They typically require special bras or camisoles with pocketUntitled 4s and can’t be worn for weeks after surgery.

Knitted Knockers on the other hand are soft, comfortable, beautiful and when placed in a regular bra they take the shape and feel of a real breast.

Therese Walker registered her interest in knitting for KK after seeing an article in a craft magazine several years ago. She now coordinates the Perth group of volunteers which has over 80 knitters.  Members also post flyers and make up baskets of KK to place in doctor surgeries’ and  hospitals. In the last 18 months they have given out over 200 pairs of KK to grateful recipients.

“Together we can in a simple, loving way bring a smile to women at a low point in their life” says founder of the organisation Barbara Demorest.
Groups rely solely on donations for materials and Knitted Knockers must never be sold – only given. Knitters must follow a pattern and use a special kit provided to make sure all KK are made to a certain standard and quality.

There is a huge demand for KK and the Perth group invites anyone interested to join them. They hold regular meetings and get-togethers in a fun, social environment. You can see what it’s all about at their next meeting on 11 March at Landsdale Farm. Contact Therese by email: waller_62@hotmail.com to register your interest.

If you’re not a knitter you can help by donating – perhaps a way to celebrate the wonderful ways women support each other this International Womens’ Day? See the website, www.knittedknockers.org for more information.
