The first weekend in December saw the opening of the new shark playground in Cervantes. Forty excited children enjoyed the rock climbing wall, netting and cubby while their parents enjoyed a coffee and a catch up beside the newly renovated Cervantes Community Recreation Centre.
The concept of the new playground was first raised by Cervantes Playgroup members at a Shire of Dandaragan ‘Meet the President/CEO’ evening in early 2017, where they discussed the needs of local children with the Shire President and staff.
Shire President, Leslee Holmes said she was, “Thrilled that the Shire was able to work so closely with the local community at all stages of the project to ensure that the playground was exactly what the community wanted in a location that worked for them.”
The Shire of Dandaragan consulted with a broad range of groups including Cervantes Playgroup, Cervantes Football Club, Cervantes Community Recreation Centre and Cervantes Ratepayers and Progress Association to build a playground the whole community could enjoy, with all groups agreeing on the style of playground and the best location – adjacent to the Cervantes Community Recreation Centre.
The playground’s shark theme was inspired by Cervantes Football Club — the Tiger Sharks
The opening was supported by local businesses, community groups and the Shire of Dandaragan who all donated funds to provide hot chocolates and a free sausage sizzle. The playground is a great new addition to Cervantes and is sure to be well used and loved by local and visiting children.
