Decorate Your Gate is on again

Dandaragan Community Resource Centre’s ‘Decorate Your Gate’ project is the proud recipient of a Road Safety Commission Grant this year, helping us to expand this innovative project.

This year the community of Dandaragan and surrounding region will have the opportunity to promote a road safety message in the lead up to and through the Christmas festive season. Residents and business owners are invited to participate by creating a display on their farm or town gate that reflects the festive season, whilst displaying a road safety ribbon. A special prize will be awarded for conveying the ‘Don’t Drive Tired’ message within the theme of the gate.

Dandaragan CRC has held this event for the past two years, recognising the importance of road safety during the harvest and Christmas season and reminding the community to stay alert and maintain their safety while using our local road systems and operating vehicles on unfamiliar roads during the holiday seasonal period. Road Safety is incredibly important to the functioning and connection of our regional communities. With the roads at their busiest, particularly with the opening of a new sand mine site, and the development of wind and solar farms, this year we must all stay vigilant.

“With the development of two large mine sites and wind farms we have over 450 workers in the region accessing various regional roads this year. They are shift workers on unfamiliar roads,” said Andrea Gray, Project Coordinator.

In the Shire of Dandaragan there are long distances between towns, industry work sites and farms. This is a large shire compared to others in the Wheatbelt .
“Driver Fatigue is thought to be responsible for up to 29% of fatal or serious injury crashes in this region, and in an agricultural, mining and fishing Shire like ours, people work long hours and then have to drive,” Andrea stated. “It is for this reason we are encouraging these industry sites to take up the challenge and join the creative fun of decorating their gates to reinforce the driver fatigue message.”

Last week Dandaragan CRC kicked off the event with lantern making at the Dandaragan Primary School and talking to the children about dangers of driving whilst tired. The students have now constructed a Christmas lantern and a Choir of Angels to decorate the school gates and the CRC staff have constructed a Grader Reindeer.

“We have held Decorate Your Gate for the past two years recognising the importance of road safety during the Harvest/ Christmas Season. Reminding the community to stay alert and maintain their safety while using our local road systems and operating vehicles on unfamiliar roads during the holiday seasonal period.”
