The town of Mogumber was fairly pumping at Mogumber Outback Club’s New Year’s Eve Rodeo as a huge crowd of just under 2300 people flocked to watch the action in the ring, kick up their heels in the dust and welcome the new year – country style.
In the arena, local cowboys Justin Edwards and heeler Neil Watson put on a good show in the Team Roping and the talent continued through Justin’s family with his son Cody Larson winning the 11-U14 Steer Ride and daughter Kiara Edwards placing second in the U11 Barrels.
Luke Metcalf had a hair-raising win on the bareback. Even the judges had to jump to safety! Luke’s family supported the rodeo by providing a place for visitors to camp overnight – which was very much appreciated.
Taya Hill won the All-round Champion Junior Cowgirl in her last event as a Junior. She is off to America next year to compete. Jack Collins of Muchea won the All-round Junior Cowboy and also won his first Rookie Bull Ride. Jack is heading over to the ABCRA National Finals in Tamworth this month – best of luck to these talented young riders!
After the competition was over, revellers headed to the mosh pit, partying to local band Magnetic.
Band-member Daryl du Plessis commented that it was one of the band’s best gigs so far. “The audience made the atmosphere as they were really enjoying themselves too.”
Pauline Carr, secretary of Mogumber Outback Club said the club was pleased with the success of the night and thanked all the volunteers involved. “The whole
event is organised by volunteers and they dug deep to make sure the competitors and spectators enjoyed the evening. From greeting the campers, selling tickets, running the stock yards, servicing toilets and of course cleaning up the next day – there are many jobs to be handled,” she said.
“The event still runs on a shoe string and MOC would welcome anyone who would be keen to help next year.”
