The last fixture for May was the President and Captain’s Day, a well attended event with Mark Sanders proving too good for the rest of the field. We are fortunate that members are keen to sponsor a Saturday club event and during June both Chris Bell and Paul Fewster each ran a successful day with an array of prizes to be won. An annual event in our calendar is the Brian Fewster Memorial Day and we are grateful that Alan and Margaret Greenwell, together with the Gingin Footy Club, generously support this occasion. A three person ambrose was organised for the day with the winners being C Yates, J Morten and T Dewar; runners up were B Cook, S Cocking and M Cocking. Early in June our ladies played for the Edmund House Cup, where forty-five players enjoyed the fine weather conditions. The winner of the cup was Fran Thompson from Ledge Point with a score of 41, closely followed by Carolyn Brodie- Hall with 39 points. Our thanks to Gillian Daniels for donating an annual trophy and to Country Values Real Estate for their continuing sponsorship of this important ladies’ fixture.

For many years Norm and June Wallace have sponsored a trophy they instigated and on 24 June we celebrated a milestone event — the 50th anniversary of the Wallace Shield. It is not unusual for sponsors to be involved in an event over a period, but it is extraordinary that one couple (with the support of their family) have continuously contributed over a fifty-year span. This special occasion was marked with some fellowship after the game with a meal for guests and
friends in the clubhouse. All the surviving past winners of the Wallace Shield were invited to attend and it was a pleasure to see so many turn up. It was very
fitting that the Wallace family were present in considerable numbers and Norm outlined some of the history surrounding the Shield. Twenty men vied for the Shield, playing a stroke round, and nine ladies organised a separate competition. The winner of the Shield was Reg Caldwell, followed in second place by Paul Fewster. This was a momentous occasion for the club and our thanks, gratitude and congratulations go to Norm, June and their family for their enduring trophy.
