Moora Speedway was back in action on Saturday 18 November with the running of the now prestigious race event, the Phill Farley Memorial. Moora Speedway are proud to run this event each year, in honour of a great man who did so much for our community. Phill was a long serving teacher of Manual Arts at Central Midlands Senior High School and it was estimated he taught 9000 kids over 40 years, starting in 1974 to 2014. He stood out because he genuinely cared about every single student and worked tirelessly to help them all make it through.

Phill was a long-standing member of Moora Speedway and had an illustrious racing career. He first raced in what was called B Stock, around 1975/76, then moved on to Super Stock and was still racing in 1984. He was Club Champion, became Vice President and halfway through his term the President left so he was acting President for that season. He also was a Scrutineer and of course an awesome driver!

The Phill Farley Memorial is the club’s major production trophy night of the season and with 24 drivers nominating, the racing was close and hard fought. Dale Cockman in the Falcon, lead for half of the 20 lap feature race, with Benny Curtin driving a Sigma, always there nipping at his heels. There was a battle royal for third, fourth and fifth place, keeping spectators on their toes, not knowing which group of cars to watch. Curtin managed to choose the path of least resistance when he and Cockman were held up passing slower traffic, and took the lead. However, following a re-start, Curtin had car trouble with a broken axel and opened the gate for Cockman to get out in front and go on to easily win. 2nd was Daniel Flavel, 3rd Gordon Wyatt, 4th Marty Fisher and in 5th was Martin Devries. Video of the race can be seen on the Moora Speedway Facebook page.
Moora Speedway would like to thank our major sponsors for the night, M&S O’Brien and Rumbold Ford and our prize money sponsors, Collie Machine Shop, Elders Moora, CraneCorp Australia, AJAX Contractors, DJ Staines Fabrication, Gene Hannington Haulage, DWC Trees and Moora Tyres.

The club is looking forward to hosting more spectacular and sizzling racing action in upcoming meetings and welcomes both drivers and spectators to come on down to Moora Speedway.
